On April 7, the National Crop Protection Center held a seminar titled “Innovation, Agripreneurship, and Intellectual Property” at the NCPC Auditorium.

Dr. Emil John Cabrera, Director of the UPLB Technology Transfer and Business Development Office, served as the resource speaker for the seminar.

The event served as an avenue for the NCPC personnel to learn what intellectual property is, its characteristics, and the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. The speaker also shed light on the need for and the process of innovation, as well as the concept of agripreneurship or the “entrepreneurial activities within the agriculture sector aimed at creating value through innovative and sustainable solutions.”

Dr. Cabrera then explained the intersection among the concepts of innovation, intellectual property, and agripreneurship, as follows:

  1. innovation leads to new technologies and solutions in agriculture;
  2. IP protection ensures that agripreneurs can protect their innovative technologies, methods, and processes; and
  3. agripreneurship benefits by offering a platform for turning innovations into market-ready solutions.

The NCPC personnel were able to inquire about their IP concerns during the seminar’s open forum.

The event was spearheaded by the NCPC Innovation and Agripreneurship Committee.
