NCPC scientists, recipient of the 2023 ISSAAS Young Scientist Award and PACS Mentorship Award
The International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences (ISSAAS) recently awarded Sci. Melissa P. Montecalvo, a career scientist and university researcher of NCPC, with the 2023 ISSAAS Young Scientist Award during the ISSAAS International Congress and General Meeting 2023, which was held from November 8 to 10 at the Acacia Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The congress theme for this year was “Integrated Management of Southeast Asian Agricultural Landscapes.”
NCPC staff participates in FAO Global Symposium on Sustainable Fall Armyworm Management
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations’ Plant Production and Protection Division organized a Global Symposium on Sustainable Fall Armyworm (FAW) Management from October 31 to November 2 at the Empark Grand Hotel in Beijing, China.

NCPC trains DA-RFO 8 on serological and PCR-based detection of Ralstonia solanacearum
The Pest Management Division of the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC) conducted training on the detection of Ralstonia solanacearum through serological and PCR-based methods. The training was held from September 25 to 29 and was conducted at the Phytobacteriology Laboratory and Plant Virology Laboratory of NCPC.

DA-BAR participates in NCPC’s CPD-accredited Refresher Course in Crop Protection
Six personnel from the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) participated in the National Crop Protection Center’s second offering of the Refresher Course on Identification and Management of Pests and Diseases in Rice, Corn, Vegetables, and Plantation Crops in 2023. The course was held virtually from October 16 to 20, 2023. The Professional Regulation Commission granted the Refresher Course with 29 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
NCPC trains DA Region III staff on Rapid Testing of Pesticide Residues
Last September 27, the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC) trained four staff members of the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office (DA-RFO) Region III’s Feed Chemical Analysis Laboratory on how to use the Rapid Test Kit (RTK) for Pesticide Residues. The training, held at the NCPC’s Pesticide Toxicology and Chemistry Laboratory consisted of hands-on activities and lectures on RTK and food safety and standards.
NCPC Quick Response Team investigates red-striped soft scale, a newly emerging insect pest in sugarcane in the Philippines
The National Crop Protection Center – Quick Response Team (NCPC – QRT) visited the provinces of Pampanga and Batangas last September 5 and 13 to monitor a newly reported sugarcane insect pest observed by the Sugar Regulatory Administration – Luzon Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SRA-LAREC). Together with the SRA-LAREC staff, the team conducted ocular inspection and sample collection at the SRA-LAREC station and on sugarcane fields in Porac, Pampanga and Calaca and Balayan in Batangas.
NCPC-UPPSAE-IWEP conduct short course on DNA barcoding and entomopathogens
The National Crop Protection Center, in collaboration with the UP Professional School for Agriculture and the Environment (UPPSAE) and the Institute of Weed Science, Entomology, and Plant Pathology (IWEP), conducted a short course on Insect Pest Identification using DNA Barcodes and Introduction to Entomopathogens at the Tagum Agricultural Development Company’s (TADECO), Panabo City, Davao del Norte last August 30 to September 1.
NCPC-UP PSAE conduct CPD-accredited training on butterfly ranching
A total of 17 delegates from Cebu, Leyte, and various regions in Mindanao convened at Agriya, Panabo City, Davao del Norte to participate in the short course on butterfly ranching and commercial breeding on May 8 to10.
